Thank You Kindly
Oh, for the cast of characters of the month of May ... each playing off the other so beautifully! We are so fortunate to have iris, magnolias, amaryllis, impatiens, gladiolus, roses, salvias, petunias, purslane, and yuccas to brighten our lives. Summer will be here soon enough and we will quickly grow accustomed to the warm weather and flowering gardens of Tallahassee. While we still recall the looonnnggg, cold winter, savor the hopeful message of May. Plant, hang a basket, adorn your table with the spoils of spring and in this month of remembering, share your bounty with those dedicated to service... mom and service men and women. Gather a bouquet for mom, and snap a stem for the veteran or the parent of a soldier. To show our appreciation to YOU, we invite you to submit a 200-word (minimum) essay acknowledging mom, or a person in the armed services by month's end and we'll enter your name in our drawing to win a Dickerson Landscaping gift card valued at $100 for any new work contracted with us from May 1 through June 31. Please look to June's Newsletter for the winning entry!

Say What You Mean...
Flowers have long been used to communicate our thoughts and feelings. Consider the following, so you can decide what your yard has to say... before your Tallahassee garden says it for you!
Iris: Faith, Wisdom, Valor, Your friendship means so much to me
Ivy: Friendship, Wedded love, Fidelity, Friendship, Affection
Magnolia: Dignity, Splendid beauty
Amaryllis: Pastoral poetry, Pride
Azalea: Fragile and ephemeral passion
Gladiolus: Strength of character, "I am really sincere"
Petunia: Anger, Resentment
Pansy: Thoughtful recollection
Daffodil: Emblem of annunciation/regard

Don't Let it Die!!!
Irrigation is essential to plant and lawn health and NOW is the time to get your irrigation checked before it gets too hot and you get too bothered to do it! Here's what to look for: broken heads & pipes (due to the cold winter); proper water coverage of your plant material, so that your plants won't perish from the heat; accurate watering times (not too long or too short) and at the right time of day. Be sure to adjust heads so you are only watering the things you should (chances are your house doesn't need it)! Be sure you're not wasting water by over watering and check for sneaky leaks.

ALERT: Fertilize with Care
Homeowners, if you are fertilizing your own yard, it is vital to use caution when it comes to how much and how often you use fertilizer. Florida is now beginning to research proper usage of fertilizer, and as result, task forces are beginning to enforce laws that have already been changed in 15 counties. Over fertilization causes many negative effects on the environment and these laws and ordinances are meant to safeguard not only the environment, but the consumer as well. We will keep you updated on the subject of proper usage in regard to fertilization and the laws that may become statewide.
